The U.S. imperialists, openly revealing their ambition to finish the Korean war and occupy the whole of Korea before "Thanksgiving Day" (November 23), launched the "Thanksgiving Day offensive" and pushed the main force into the Unsan area to break through a defence line of the Korean People's Army (KPA) in cooperation with other offensive forces.

After seeing through the enemies' moves with his scientific and gifted foresight, the President instructed KPA commanding officers to open up a prelude to re-advance in the Unsan area, saying that the U.S. imperialist aggressor forces seemed to be aiming at the area.

On October 23, Juche 39 (1950), he came to the forefront command post for a combat operation in the Unsan area. He mapped out a new operation plan without any delay and gave an orientation of the operation and detailed duty to an official of the General Staff.

At last, on his orders, the KPA soldiers launched a general counteroffensive in the Unsan area on October 25, 1950.

The brave soldiers of the KPA mercilessly wiped out the enemies. In the battle, the 2nd corps of the south Korean puppet army was totally destroyed with only two regiments left and the 8th cavalry regiment under the U.S. 1st cavalry division, dispatched to fill the right flank of the collapsed U.S. 8th Army Corps, was encircled and annihilated. Units under the U.S. 1st army corps, too, suffered deadly blows in the boundary line of Thaechon-Unsan.

The enemies recorded the defeat in the Unsan area as a "tragedy of Unsan". Upset at the "tragedy of Unsan", Walker, commander of the U.S. 8th Army Corps ordered all units to retreat.

The brilliant victory at the battle in the Unsan area, conducted under the extraordinary operational and tactical policy of the President, completely frustrated the U.S. imperialists' scheme to conclude the Korean War before "Thanksgiving Day".
