The zoo is associated with the immortal leadership feats of President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il. The President chose the site for the zoo at Kuchon Pavilion in September Juche 51 (1962) and the Chairman visited it several times to give precious instructions for its operation.

Animal houses were newly built or enlarged and new riding course and resting places appeared in the zoo.

The renovated zoo is crowded with visitors every day.
