The championships will bring together players from the April 25 Players Team, the Amnokgang Sports Team and others who will compete in more than 530 subcategories of 31 events such as football, basketball, weightlifting, shooting and Taekwon-Do.

Attending the opening ceremony were Kim Tok Hun, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), vice-president of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK and premier of the Cabinet, Ri Il Hwan, member of the Political Bureau and secretary of the WPK Central Committee, Ri Thae Sop, minister of Public Security, Kim Song Ryong, vice premier of the Cabinet, leading officials of commissions, ministries and national institutions, officials concerned, Pyongyang citizens and sportspersons.

Kim Il Guk, minister of Physical Culture and Sports, made an opening address.
