True to the intention of the WPK, intellectuals conducted a drive for breaking through the cutting edge and contributed to improving the country's economic development and the people's standard of living.

The title of academician was awarded to Sim Kwang Chol, vice-rector of Phyongsong University of Coal Mining, according to a decision of the State Commission for Conferment of Academic Degrees and Titles.

Professorship was conferred on Kim Tok Song, a teacher of Kim Hyong Jik University of Education, Jang Chol Su and Kim Hak Song, section chiefs of the University of Sciences, Ri Sang Gon, department head of University of National Economy, Hong Jong Ok, a teacher of the Party School of the Ministry of Railways, and Pak Hon Hyo, section chief of the State Academy of Sciences.

Doctorate went to 40 persons including Kim Kwang Min, director of Kim Il Sung University and Kang Song Jin, a teacher of Kim Hyong Jik University of Education.

And 107 persons were awarded the title of associate professor and 798 persons master's degrees.
