Conservation and Rational Use of Wetland Brisk in DPRK
Pyongyang, February 2 (KCNA) -- February 2 is the World Wetland Day.

The wetland ecosystem is well-developed in the DPRK as it has dense river and stream networks and lots of wetlands including reservoirs, lakes and tidelands.

This year's theme of World Wetland Day is "Wetlands and human wellbeing".

Activities for the protection and rational use of wetlands which are directly linked with the promotion of the people's well-being are brisk in the DPRK.

The state prospective plan for environmental protection and the state medium- and long-term green plan, both of which are aimed at protecting and restoring the ecological environment of the country, have been worked out, and preparations are being made to turn the Mundok Migratory Bird (Wetland) Reserve and its some surrounding area in South Phyongan Province into a model wetland ecological environment area.

Efforts have been paid to sustained and rational use of wetlands through cage-net fish farming, aquatic plants cultivation and creation of landscape in wetlands, including rivers and streams, lakes and artificial ponds, across the country, thus making them positively contribute to the people's life.

The country is increasing the rice productivity and the utilization rate of tideland paddy fields to bring high yields in grain production.

The ecological survey and evaluation of the overall reserves of the country are regularly conducted. In recent years, more than 30 migratory bird and sea bird reserves have been investigated to confirm birds to be protected.

Through TV, newspaper, radio and other media, the country is intensifying the work for enhancing public awareness of protection and use of biodiversity in wetlands.
