Pyongyang, May 21 (KCNA) -- Monumental edifices representing the era of the Workers' Party have appeared on the banks of the Pothong River in Pyongyang, the capital city of the DPRK, one after another, adding beauty to the scenery. The Pothong River was the one of disaster that caused huge human and material losses every year before the liberation of Korea. President Kim Il Sung attended a ground-breaking ceremony for improving the Pothong River on May 21, Juche 35 (1946) and took the first shovel for the project. Since then, it has been transformed into a river full of people's happy laughter. That day, in his encouraging speech to all the participants in the improvement project, he said that the Pyongyang citizens should hasten the project by giving full play to their patriotic devotion and creativity and spruce up the democratic capital city of new Korea and thus contribute to building a prosperous democratic, independent and sovereign state. In response to his patriotic call, Pyongyang citizens worked a miracle of completing the project within a matter of 55 days. With the completion of the project, the area around the Pothong River came to be free from flood damage and the appearance of the capital city was changed. Under the wise guidance of the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un, parks and pleasure grounds on the banks of the Pothong River were renovated in keeping with the requirements of the new century and modern commercial service facilities, mass sports service centre, luxury housing district for ordinary working people and other new edifices in the era of the Workers' Party have been built one after another.
