New Forest Plant Species Bred in DPRK
Pyongyang, July 10 (KCNA) -- Researchers of the Tongmyong Biological Technology Development Center in the DPRK bred Prunus black humilis, a new forest plant species of great economic value, and harvested its first fruits.

The fruit, 150 milligrams of calcium per 100 grams, is in high demand for its taste and nutritive value.

Fruits can be harvested two years after the tree is planted.

0.5 tons of fruits can be harvested in one hectare in the first year and 2.5 tons in the second year and about 5 tons from the third year.

The fruit contains much content of natural colors. Juice, wine, vinegar, milk, can goods and other health food are made from fruits.

The new forest plant spices grows well even in low-fertility soil and is very effective in preventing soil from being washed away as it has a strong resistance to drought and a high capacity to keep soil moisture.

It is of great value in landscaping, too.
