Area of Mt. Chilbo in DPRK, One of World Network of Biosphere Reserves
Pyongyang, September 30 (KCNA) -- Mt. Chilbo, called as "Hambukkumgang" from olden times, is famous for its scenery of mountain and sea.

The area of Mt Chilbo was registered as one of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves for the fourth time in the DPRK in Juche 103 (2014).

The area covers more than 50 000 hectares and has diverse ecosystems.

It is inhabited by more than 270 kinds of vertebrates, over 820 kinds of higher plants, 10 kinds of special plants and tens of endangered species of animals and plants.

There are many edible fruit trees like Tricholoma matsutake, the specialty of the mountain, wild grape and fruit of Actinidia arguta, over 60 kinds of edible herbs and over 130 kinds of medicinal plants including wild insam and fruit of Schizandra chinensis which are traditional Koryo medicinal materials.

In the area of Mt Chilbo, there are many historical remains and relics of the primitive, ancient and medieval ages showing the time-honored history of the country including the Kaesim Temple and more than 10 natural monuments.

The area has been visited by many tourists from long time ago, as it has 160-odd scenic spots, and thick and splendid forests, wonderful peaks and scenery of Sea Chilbo are harmonized with each other.

200 kms-long ring roads including one hundred and tens of kms of the main roads, branch roads and sightseeing roads are formed in the area so that the tourists can visit all scenic spots in Inner Chilbo, Outer Chilbo and Sea Chilbo.

Mt Chilbo, a famous mountain in the East Sea, has been turned into a cultural recreation ground for the people under the wise leadership of the Workers' Party of Korea.
