Hoeryong White Apricot, Specialty of DPRK
|
|
Pyongyang, February 20 (KCNA) -- Hoeryong white apricot is an intermediate variety of apricot which has been cultivated in the Hoeryong area of North Hamgyong Province of the DPRK from long ago. It can bear fruit within four or five years since its sapling is planted and it is possible to reap it since ten years. Output from a tree is 30-50 kilograms on an average and from per hectare approximately 15-25 tons. As its demand for soil is not high, it can be planted in the vicinity of houses and along roads, including hillsides. It weighs about 60 grams and has a flat round or round shape and yellowish white peel. Its pulp is yellow white, refreshing and sweet with rich water and aroma. It contains sugar and organic acid such as malic acid and citric acid, and is rich in oil, pectin, vitamins and other substances, which are efficacious for strengthening blood vessels and preventing cancer. Its seeds stop coughing and loosen phlegm. It is a good raw material for making various processed products including wine, canned, jam, jelly, fruit juice and dried fruit. President Kim Il Sung visited Hoeryong in July, 1954 and other several times and gave detailed instructions ranging from an issue of planting many white apricot trees in Hoeryong to a method of fruit processing. The Hoeryong white apricot was registered as a regional intangible cultural heritage in the DPRK. |
