The library is a large modern library with a total floor space of over 11 000 square meters. It, equipped with reading rooms of over 1 000 seats, houses more than 1.2 million books including gift books sent by President Kim Il Sung, Chairman Kim Jong Il and the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un.

Its inauguration ceremony took place on Wednesday.

Present there were Vice-Premier Jon Sung Guk, Department Director of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) Choe Tong Myong, Chairman of the Education Commission Kim Sung Du, Secretary of the Pyongyang Municipality Committee of the WPK Ri Myong Chol, officials concerned, and officials, teaching staff and students of the university.

Kim Sung Chan, president of Kim Il Sung University and minister of Higher Education under the Education Commission, made an inaugural address.
